For the first time in my life, the pink team is outnumbered by the blue team! Growing up, pink wwwaaaaaayyyyy outnumbered the blue that Dear ole Dad could muster up. He didn't really stand a chance, quite frankly, against the girly powers of Zsa Zsa, Lala and me! There were dresses, dolls, ballet recitals, cheerleading competitions and so on. And like a champ, the man's man obliged and supported his girls every step of the way.
Then, when Dear Hubs and I added our first diva dog to the family, Sheila added a point to make the girls outnumber the boys in my own household. While diva dog #2, Colby, levelled the playing field ... I've neva eva considered the thought that I would one day be OUTNUMBERED in my own home!
While I will enjoy every moment before Baby B grows boy enough to start toting bugs and boy things into the home, this book will prominently be displayed on my not so childproof glass coffee table in the media room.
I saw this book at Barnes and Noble a while back and just thought it was the most clever little collection of short stories, tips and tricks. Of course, it must be made mine! A survival guide of sorts, The Double Daring Book for Girls by Buchanan and Peskowitz is an adorable collection of stories, facts and tips that every daring girl must know! Hey, there's even a short entry on "how to fish" ... perhaps this will help prep me for the day when Baby B asks me to put a worm on a hook for him (eeeewwwwww).

June's Book Club Read is a Must!
I never thought I'd say this, but after a few short months of book club readings, I've developed a new appreciation for fiction reading! This month's book, The Help, by Kathryn Stockett just put me over the edge and I'm just in love with this book.
A brief overview of the book from Barnes and Noble:
Stockett's writing style and her use of multiple character narration really puts the reader in the moment and captivates you into the story setting. As the reader, you have the opportunity to "walk a mile" in the various character's shoes and see just how things are from their vantage point, experiencing each little detail just as it is your own. Group consensus was that we all just loved Aibileen, wouldn't cross Minnie if our life depended on it, related with Skeeter and all despised Hilly! Each character was just bigger than life and developed so well.
For this southern belle, our book club couldn't have picked a better book to kick off the summer. I've always found great interest in the works of southern authors, but Stockett's book grabbed my attention more than most and I just loved each page.
Last night, our book club gathered poolside to discuss the book and everyone agreed that this was their fave title thus far. We dined on fabulous chocolate pie, a humorous selection given the stories about Minnie's pie in the book, and enjoyed lively discussion about all things southern and related to the book.
Move on over To Kill A Mockingbird, Secret Life of Bees and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil ... The Help is joining you at the top of my MUST READ list!

A brief overview of the book from Barnes and Noble:
Be prepared to meet three unforgettable women:
Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.
Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.
Minny, Aibileen's best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody's business, but she can't mind her tongue, so she's lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.
Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women-mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends-view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Glamorous Recipes
When I heard about this cookbook a few weeks ago, I knew it had to be mine! The editors of Glamour have teamed up and put together this little gem and I must say it's a great little find. The title of the cookbook is 100 Recipes Every Woman Should Know: Engagement Chicken and 99 Other Fabulous Dishes to Get the Most You Ever Wanted Out of Life. While the title may be as long as the cookbook, the recipes are actually really good and definitely things you want to know how to make. The book starts with the folk lore of "Engagement Chicken", a simple dish that is said to be so impressive it makes eligible bachelors pop the big question, and moves on through apps, main dishes and starters that are all classified on complexity based on a 3 stiletto scale (clever since this is Glamour mag after all).
Besides my curiousity about Engagement Chicken which sounds very tasty, the other recipes are equally adorably named and have caught my attention as well. From the quick and easy "Make it in the Car Artichoke Dip" to yummy sounding main dishes like "Bikini Season Baked Salmon", "Marry Me Lasagna" and "It's Almost Pay Day Chilli" each recipe represents a time tested recipe diva chefs everywhere should indeed know how to make. The desserts also caught my eye with names like "Impress His Family Chardonnay Cake" and "Bribe a Kid Brownies".
So grab this book and see how many of these fab dishes you can conquer. After all, the title claims some lofty expectations if you do!

A Reliable Wife
This month's book club installment featured Robert Goolrick's novel A Reliable Wife. I've grown to love this once a month event and look forward to what our next discussion will have in store! Unanimously, our little book club agreed that this book was far more dark and twisted than the title portrays, but generally we gave it thumbs up reviews.
A synopsis of the book:
With just a little creative thinking, your creatively named book worm menu isn't as far away as you may think! Our buffet menu included:
So grab a few friends, a juicy read and a few fun apps and have your own book club!
A synopsis of the book:
He placed a notice in a Chicago paper, an advertisement for "a reliable wife." She responded, saying that she was "a simple, honest woman." She was, of course, anything but honest, and the only simple thing about her was her single-minded determination to marry this man and then kill him, slowly and carefully, leaving her a wealthy widow, able to take care of the one she truly loved.
What Catherine Land did not realize was that the enigmatic and lonely Ralph Truitt had a plan of his own. And what neither anticipated was that they would fall so completely in love.
Filled with unforgettable characters, and shimmering with color and atmosphere, A Reliable Wife is an enthralling tale of love and madness, of longing and murder.
The literary banter was lively and the food and drinks were flowing. A good time was had by all. Since it was my turn to host, in true charmed life styling, I whipped together a little casual tablescape of nibbles perfect for noshing during our discussion. And of course we had a theme for our entertaining buffet, Book Work Treats. Each of the oh-so-simple appetizers was named for a famous literary work. Hey, it's not every day we get to dine on Hamlet sandwiches and The Inferno pretzels!

- And of course, a bowl of adorable "book worms" :)
So grab a few friends, a juicy read and a few fun apps and have your own book club!

Claim To Fame
It's one of those random things that comes up at cocktail parties ... how someone's cousin's boyfriend's friends know a celebrity and had some juicy gossip to share. Or maybe it's that random happening of a brush with stardom in an airport (a la my cross country flight with drunk Eddie Money as a seat mate), but these are the interesting sidebar conversations that add a little interest to the everyday.
This weekend while in Philly with my wonderful inlaws, my dear MIL told me that she recently sold a cavalier to Project Runway finalist Laura Bennett. For background, MIL breeds and shows Cavalier King Charles spaniels. Laura's little pup is the same tri-color breed as my diva dogs (but couldn't possibly be as cute). MIL shared that Laura was a great lady and how much she enjoyed meeting her and working with her. MIL said that Laura came to their house in Philly a few times over the past few months and now Laura, her big family of eight and their new furry addition are happily settling in in her NYC digs.
For those that can't quite place Laura, she was the firey red head from Season 3 of the hit show Project Runway. Her designs are mostly conservative and she tends to focus on evening wear, but has had huge success with a private label brand with QVC. Last year, she authored the book Didn't I Feed You Yesterday? A Mother's Guide to Sanity in Stilettos. As a firm believer in super high heels (yes, still even at 7 months preggo), I have to say "Amen, sister!" and cannot wait to download this and read it asap!
And last random Project Runway / Laura Bennett tie in, the next Season of Project Runway is casting in NYC in just a few weeks! So, stay tuned for new episodes coming soon!

The Gathering of Friends
What's better for a foodie and domestic diva than a wonderful cookbook? This book is the perfect gift for the diva who loves to entertain in your life. I'm the proud owner of these books and hoping that the third addition magically appears at my house (hint hint Dear Hubs :)!).
The Gathering of Friends cookbook series is unlike many other cookbooks because it really focuses on the entire presentation of a lovely meal. It's not just recipes, it's not just tablescapes ... it's beautifully arranged party ideas that are jammed packed with so much style and grace you can't help but be inspired.
Volume 1 and 2 are both beautiful creations. Volume 3 was just introduced at the end of March 2011 and I'm sure it will be another smashing success in the series.
A few fantastic recipes from the first editions can be found on the cookbook's website. Definitely check out the Fried Tomato Sandwiches and Honey Glazed Walnut Rolls. Divine!
So, grab the books and be inspired!
